Case Study: Reverse Engineering A Car's Suspension System

December 01, 2023

A good car suspension system is important: you don’t want to be caught without your winter tires during the winter season, or you might lose your grip on the road on a cold wintry day. In the same way, it is important for race vehicles, or any car for that matter, to have a good suspension arm for a solid and comfortable ride.

Gregyx Motorsport, a racing team specialized in building cutting-edge technology for road cars and then using them for racing competitions, in partnership with the Shop3D.ca team, decided to upgrade a Honda Civic Si in preparation for a race.

Using the Shining3d Einstar 3D Scanner, they digitized the suspension setup of the Honda Civic Si, upgraded the technology, and made it better prepared for the race.

The Process

To start with, they scanned the existing suspension of the car using the Einstar 3D Scanner. The scanner produced such intricate details that you could see every nook and cranny of the suspension, revealing potential defects in the initial design. This prompted the Gregyx team to build an improved version of the suspension arm, after which they subjected it to virtual testing to ensure its reliability.

The Einstar also provided great accuracy, and we're not surprised. Without it, the project would have required endless measurements for every part, length, height, and hinge. All the measurements were clearly seen through the scan, with precision so sharp, it left no room for error.

Outstanding Results

The results were amazing! Not only was the car’s suspension replicated, but the Gregyx team made significant improvements to the design of the suspension arm. The best part is this: they went into the race with the revamped suspension on the 2012 Honda Civic Si and came 1st place!
