Bruce Power wins award for new 3D printed radiation shielding
December 09, 2024
It feels like just a few months ago when the Bruce Power team walked into the Shop3D.ca showroom with a challenging application that truly tested our technical knowledge. They had a list of demanding requirements for a 3D printer. Typically, such high demands come with hefty budgets, but this time, we had to prove that our solution was both feasible and within their budget.
The engineering team aimed to use tungsten-infused filament to create parts potentially weighing over 30 lbs each to accelerate prototyping custom shielding parts—an achievement never before repeatedly realized. Drawing from our experience with similar materials like 316L stainless steel with a binder, we recommended the Raise3D Technologies Pro3 Printer. Its reinforced build platform and abrasion-resistant upgrades made it the perfect fit for their needs, ensuring durability despite the tungsten's wear.
After months of working on the project discreetly, we were delighted to learn about the results of their project when they shared their award with us. Congratulations to the Bruce Power team on their well-deserved innovation award! We're proud to have been part of your journey.
