Bambu Lab AMS 2 Pro: What's New?
June 13, 2025
Bambu Lab recently launched the Automatic Material System (AMS) 2 Pro, and we finally got a look and feel of it in the Shop3D showroom. In this article, we delve into all the new features, how it differs from the first AMS, and everything else you need to know.
What's New?
The AMS 2 Pro’s headlining feature is that it can now actively dry the filaments stored inside the unit, as opposed to simply acting as a dry box. In addition, both the filament inlets and the feeder motor have been upgraded. The inlets are now made of ceramic for increased durability, and the feeder motor is 60% faster. Lastly, the internal PTFE tubes are easily accessible, so you no longer have to unscrew and remove the bottom panel to clear jams if filament breaks inside the AMS.
Drying
The AMS 2 Pro can reach temperatures of 65°C. This high temperature helps dry the filaments stored inside it. During the drying process, the filament spool rotates automatically, and an electromagnetically controlled air vent expels the moisture. There are two main limitations with drying, however.
Firstly, you'll need to remove the filament from the inlets during the drying process, otherwise the spools will not be able to rotate. This also means that you cannot print and dry at the same time.
The AMS 2 Pro should also be connected to a printer to dry filament, so it cannot be used as a standalone filament dryer.
What’s in the box?
In addition to the AMS 2 Pro itself, desiccant packs, PTFE tubes, and the 6-pin connector (which connects the AMS to the printer) are included with the unit.
Compatibility
The AMS 2 Pro is fully compatible with the H2D. It can also be used with X1 and P1 series printers, though to use the filament drying feature, you will need to power the AMS 2 Pro externally (using Bambu Lab’s power switching adapter). Support for A1 series printers is also coming Q3 2025.
Upgrade Kit
The AMS 2 Pro only comes with the accessories needed to connect to the H2D. To connect to X1 and P1 series printers, you may need a few additional accessories. To facilitate this, two different upgrade kits are available. The first kit contains a filament buffer, while the second kit contains an AMS hub. Both kits also include the power switching adapter and a 4-pin cable to connect the filament buffer/AMS hub to the printer. Upgrade kit 1 (which contains the filament buffer) is for users who don’t already have an AMS for their printer and only plan to use one AMS with their printer. Upgrade kit 2 includes the AMS hub, which allows up to 4 AMS/AMS 2 Pros to be connected to the printer.
Multiple AMS 2 Pros Connected to an H2D
While you don’t need the power switching adapter when connecting the AMS 2 Pro to the H2D, the H2D can only power one AMS 2 Pro at a time. This limitation only really comes up, though, if multiple AMS 2 Pros are being used for drying at the same time, or if printing with one AMS and drying filament with another. When printing and drying, it’s recommended but not required to externally power the second AMS, as power used for drying will be reduced. If drying with multiple AMS 2 Pros, each additional AMS beyond the first will need to be externally powered.
