UltiMaker Nylon (Polyamide): Abrasion-Resistant And Durable

Used by many manufacturers worldwide, Nylon (polyamide) is well-known for its impressive durability, high strength-to-weight ratio, flexibility, low friction, and corrosion resistance. Its ability to withstand significant mechanical stress makes it a great choice for 3D printing tools, functional prototypes, and end-use parts.

Print Settings
  • Print speed: 35-50mm/s
  • Nozzle temp: 250 C
  • Bed Temp: 60 C
  • Fan = 35%
  • Bed material: Clean Glass
  • Bed material on difficult prints: Stick Glue or Adhesion sheet
  • Adhesion Setting: Raft for large parts, Brim for small
Shop3D.ca Notes
Nylon spools come in 0.75kg. 2.85mm diameter and approximately 90m long.
Nylon is extremely strong and wear-resistant. You can immediately tell this is a strong material when trimming off the ends of the filament to insert into the printer. It is perhaps one of the toughest materials available for FDM printing. This is the material to use if you don't want to compromise on strength.
That said, Nylon is perhaps one of the more difficult materials to print. It is known for water absorption and warping. If left out in the open, nylon will slowly absorb atmospheric moisture, when it does this, the moisture will boil in your nozzle when you print causing small puffs of steam to emanate from your nozzle. This won't damage the printer but will affect the print quality a little bit.  To avoid this, seal in a Ziploc with desiccant after printing rather than leaving it on the spool holder.
Warping is also sometimes an issue for Nylon, be prepared for it to shrink and the base to warp a little bit after cooling if you don't enclose your printer. We recommend printing with a heated bed AND blue tape.
