Shining3D EinScan HX vs Peel 3D Peel 3 - The Pros & Cons
February 22, 2023
As we enter the new year, 3D scanning technology is becoming increasingly more popular. With this rate of technological advancement and interest, it was only a matter of time before competition heated up! When it comes to selecting a 3D Scanner for your project, you will come across a plethora of machines, each of which is excellent for a specific purpose... but the question is, which 3D Scanner best suits YOUR purpose?
In this article, we compare these two 3D Scanners by scanning the same object on both machines and analyzing the pros and cons of each.
The Shining3D EinScan HX is best suited for use with large objects, but it can also detect colour under certain conditions. The HX can also scan VERY large objects with the help of strategically placed metal markers. ExScan, the EinScan software, also allows you to export your scan to a variety of file formats, including OBJ, STL, ASC, PLY, P3, and 3MF.
The Peel 3D Peel 3 on the other hand has very user-friendly software and, with the help of an Add-On, allows you to import/export to and from Solidworks. You can also fine-tune your settings for ultra-small, small, medium, and large objects, resulting in a more accurate scan.
Here is how they compare:
Shining3D EinScan HX
Object Scanned: BMW Rim
Time taken to Scan: 10mins
Difficulty/Usability: Easy
Type of Technology: Laser and LED Hybrid
Resolution: 40µm
Surface Quality (on a scale of 1-10): 9
Notes:
- Extremely fast on medium resolution
- Captures high details and features
- Metal markers for easy & reusable application. This is convenient for larger scans (cars, boats etc.)
- Captures large items with complex features in great detail
- Rapid mode allows for scanning without markers and attaining colour
- Able to scan with poor ambient lighting
- Very sharp scans with high accuracy
- Automatic Alignment works effortlessly with markers
- Has some difficulty picking up on smaller details and small objects
- Does not pick up on colour in laser mode
Final Thoughts:
Overall the Shining3D EinScan HX is a great scanner that excels at capturing high detail and maintaining dimensional accuracy. Paired with Geomagics, this scanner is ideal for reverse engineering and much more! The HX includes a user-friendly software that provides reliable results. With the integration of the Hybrid blue light laser and LED Light this provides you better performance to reflective and dark surfaces. The EinScan HX is also able to export in a variety of file types (OBJ, STL, ASC, PLY, P3, 3MF) for a multitude of uses!
Peel3D Peel 3
Object Scanned: BMW Rim
Time taken to Scan: 15mins
Difficulty/Usability: Easy
Type of Technology: IR VCSEL
Resolution: 0.250 mm/m, up to 0.1mm
Surface Quality (on a scale of 1-10): 8
Notes:
- Software is easy to maneuver
- With the Add-on of Peel CAD, you can easily import and reverse engineer/export to Solidworks
- Software allows you to customize scan settings (Ultra small, small, medium, large objects) and adjusts accordingly. You can also choose the desired level of resolution
- Peel 3D provides you with everything needed to get started, such as a calibration board and tracking markers. You can purchase a carrying case and lens protector for additional protection.
- Very efficient software with the addition of PeelCAD
- Overall scanning time is short
- Colour camera is bold and accurate
- Human scanning can be conducted, however the flashing light is extremely bright, impacting the ability to keep eyes open
- Struggles with smaller scans even on the corresponding setting. This scanner is ideal for larger items
- The scans are not as sharp as EinScan HX
Final Thoughts:
With the ergonomic design, multi-function touch screen and improved performance you can expect the Peel 3 to be a very effective addition to your workflow. Peel 3 caters to various applications and industries such as engineering, VR, Healthcare, Arts and product design. Peel 3’s addition of Peel CAD allows you to extract all the information needed from your scan and send them to your preferred CAD software with ease of use for reverse engineering.
Overall, each scanner has advantages and disadvantages. The right scanner for your specific application is determined by your objectives and expectations. You can speak with an expert here to learn more about which 3D Scanner would best suit your needs!
