Tough 1500 Resin is Now Certified for Skin Contact Safety
August 05, 2021
Formlabs is constantly innovating both on their 3D printers and their materials. It’s no secret that Formlabs is a leader in this particular material science space. Tough 1500 Resin has been evaluated for skin contact safety in accordance with ISO 10993-1, and has passed the requirements for the following endpoints:
- ISO 10993-5: Not cytotoxic
- ISO 10993-10: Not an irritant
- ISO 10993-10: Not a sensitizer
What does this mean for you?
If you own a Form 3B already, it gives you yet another material that’s biocompatible.
If you own a Form 3, this can make a big impact on how you prototype parts when skin contact is involved. Previously, if you wanted to print with biocompatible materials you’d have to opt for the Form 3B. If you seldom need the biocompatibility of the 3B this put you in a bit of a tough spot. Do you pay extra for the Form 3B or accept that you won’t have the biocompatibility printing capability with the Form 3? Tough 1500 changes this and allows everyone with a resin Formlabs machine (Form 2, 3, 3B, 3L, 3BL) to have the option to print with a certified biocompatible resin. Paired with Tough 1500 Resin’s stiff and pliable performance, these test results make Tough 1500 Resin ideal for extended skin contact applications such as wearables, personal protective equipment, and other consumer goods.
Tough 1500 Resin will continue to be supported on all Formlabs stereolithography (SLA) 3D printers - Form 2, Form 3, Form 3B, Form 3L, and Form 3BL. This makes Tough 1500 Resin the first certified skin-safe material available on the Form 3 and Form 3L.
