Notes

Open Material Mode: Open Material Mode is included free with every Form Studio 1, with no license fee, so you can print in any 405 nm resin. To run third-party or open materias you'll need the the Resin Tank Pro; as the standard Resin Tank is not chemically compatible with open materials.

Product Highlights

Top Features

ENGINEERED FOR SPEED

Most prints finish in under two hours. A custom lens array and 28 LEDs deliver a uniform, highly collimated 6 mW/cm² light field that cures resin quickly and evenly. Release Texture V2 and a flexible film tank reduce peel forces for faster printing without compromising surface finish or fine detail.

A RESIN PRINTER THAT’S SAFE TO USE WHEREVER YOU WORK

Low-odor Alpha Resins are the first to achieve UL GREENGUARD Gold, certifying low VOC emissions for the printing process when printed on Form Studio 1 with VOC Extractor. Liquid resin scores as a non-skin irritant under OECD 439, and post-processed parts meet ISO 10993 requirements for long-term skin contact, making them suitable for wearables.

PRINT AMAZING PARTS

30 μm pixels and finely tuned anti-aliasing capture subpixel detail, while lower peel forces and light-touch supports leave smooth, clean surfaces. Every material setting is calibrated for dimensional accuracy, holding ±0.15% XY tolerance so assemblies fit together as designed.

UNMATCHED RELIABILITY

Every material comes with validated print settings, tuned on hundreds of test parts. During each print, intelligent control systems monitor resin temperature, resin level, print forces, and leveling, and an integrated camera shows progress remotely in the Form Mobile App.

PRINT WITH ANY RESIN

Start with validated Formlabs resins for reliable results out of the box, or branch out to third-party resins with no license fee.

Compatible materials

  • Alpha Resins (standard Resin Tank)
  • Flexible 80A Resin V2 and True Cast Resin (standard Resin Tank)
  • Tough 1500 Resin V2 (Resin Tank Pro)
  • Third-party 405 nm resins (Resin Tank Pro)
  • Not compatible: biocompatible dental resins and other engineering resins

Product FAQs

Can the camera be disabled on Form Studio 1?

The camera can be disabled in three ways:

  • 1st method: you can put a cap that comes with the printer (in the accessories box). This is also
available as a file that you can print, in the preloaded print jobs.
  • 2nd method: you can disable the camera in the printer UI. This is something that is also shown
during onboarding steps. Note that camera and timelapse are not the same. You can disable
timelapse and still have the camera enabled.
  • 3rd method: unplug the wire to completely disconnect the camera, similar to Form 4 and Form 4L.

Form Studio 1 does not have a mixer arm like the Form 4. How do you mix the resin in the tank without one, and keep it homogenous?

Form Studio 1 uses a resin tank (Form Studio 1 Resin Tank) built with a film engineered for Formlabs Alpha Resins. This film removes the need for continuous mixing. The tradeoff is a narrower range of chemical compatibility: this tank works only with Alpha Resins and select others.

Form Studio 1 can also print Tough 1500 and 3rd party materials in the Form Studio 1 Resin Tank Pro, but without a mixer, print speed runs slower than Form 4. For a heavy Tough resin workload, Form 4 is the better fit.

Form Studio 1 still mixes resin when it needs to, either to even out heating or to reduce settling after resin sits in the tank. In those cases, the printer runs a build platform mix routine, shifting the build platform through the resin. This is the same basic mixing approach used in many LCD printers.

Form 4 tracked resin volume by weight. How does Form Studio 1 track it?

Form Studio 1 tracks resin volume the same way Form 3/3+ does: by usage. Each printed layer consumes a measured amount of resin, and the printer logs that amount to the cartridge. Form Studio 1 refines this method slightly, but the underlying approach is unchanged from Form 3. Usage tracking is an indirect method, so it carries a higher error rate than direct, weight-based tracking. This tradeoff exists on Form 3 as well; it is not unique to Form Studio 1. The resin release mechanism is also unchanged from Form 4.

Is Form Studio 1 compatible with Resin Pumping System (RPS)?

No, Form Studio 1 is not compatible with the Resin Pumping System.

Why are there two tanks? What is the difference? Why can’t we print any resin in the Standard tank?

The Form Studio 1 Resin Tank uses a film engineered for Formlabs Alpha Resins. It is engineered to deliver fast printing and an improved supported surface finish with Alpha Resins. The tradeoff is the tank film is not chemically compatible with all materials.

Tough 1500 Resin V2 is not compatible with this tank: certain components in those resins damage the film. Many third-party resins carry similar incompatible ingredients. That is the reason for the restriction and why they made the Form Studio 1 Resin Tank Pro

Users making their own settings for Alpha Resins in Resin Tank Pro should expect roughly 60% print speed of what the Standard tank delivers, and the Standard tank costs less. There is no upside to running Alpha Resins in the Pro tank.

What are the LPU and Backlight Unit differences between Form 4, other low-cost printers, and FormStudio 1?

Form 4 runs a higher-powered Backlight Unit at 16 mW/cm², with 63 individually lensed LEDs. Form Studio 1 runs a lower-powered BLU at 6 mW/cm², with 28 LEDs. Low-cost printers typically use a COB (chip-on-board) architecture with a single Fresnel lens. Both Form 4 and Form Studio 1 output more power than low-cost printers, which typically run around 2 mW/cm². On the LPU, Form 4 uses a 50 micron pixel and Form Studio 1 uses a 35 micron pixel, while low-cost printers go as small as 14 microns. Pixel size alone does not determine part accuracy, feature resolution, or surface quality. Both Form 4 and Form Studio 1 outperform low-cost SLA printers even where their pixel size is larger.

How does Form Studio 1 connect to Wi-Fi? Can customers use the printer without connecting it? How do they update firmware if it is offline?

Form Studio 1 connects over Wi-Fi, on both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz bands. There is also an ethernet option. To connect, customers go to the printer UI, then Settings, then Connectivity. The printer runs fully offline. We recommend connecting to an account to unlock the full feature set, including remote print monitoring and the mobile app. Without a connection, customers update firmware through PreForm over a USB connection.
